Air pollution action days

What is an Air Pollution Action Day?
Each day, air quality data is collected from a network or air monitoring stations located throughout the region. An Air Pollution Action Day Alert is issued when data from these monitors, along with weather conditions, indicate the potential for widespread ozone or fine particulate matter levels at or above the Orange—“Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category on the Air Quality Index for multiple days.

How Do We Know When it is An Air Pollution Action Day?
Local media sources will be notified to report the Air Pollution Action Day message through regional television, radio and newspapers. Member Partners are notified the afternoon prior to an Air Pollution Action Day in order to alert their employees and to implement their Air Pollution Action Day activities.

In addition, registered subscribers to the Illinois EnviroFlash system, including coalition members, will receive notification of all Air Pollution Action Days via email. As a result of the notification, coalition members are asked to notify their employees about the potential health risks and actions to reduce emissions. Area residents are also alerted so they will know when to take necessary precaution to protect their health and to take action to further reduce contributions to air pollution.
