I love animals, and despite my allergy to most of them, I own two cats and a small puppy that I recently picked up.

The little suffering they cause me isn’t near as bad as the suffering some people I know go through due to pet allergies.

But still, the allergies are there, and they’re pretty annoying as they reduce the overall quality of time I have with my pets.

And to be honest, that was one of the reasons why I picked up my first ever purifier all those years ago.

Since then, the symptoms of the allergic reactions I have as a result of my pets have minimized. 

I almost don’t even notice them anymore.

But it wasn’t always this way.

I conducted a ton of research when picking up my first air purifier. 

I did this to ensure that it would not only purify the air at my home but also help prevent some of the triggers for the allergic symptoms I get from my pets.

The Airmega AP-1512HH by Coway is arguably my favorite air purifier for pets on the market – hence why it is on top of the list.

When I first came across this unit, I bought it within 2 weeks.

It just made sense because I knew the difference it would make in my overall quality of life around my furry friends.

This air purifier has a four-stage filtration system – the last of which is an ionizer, which I wish wasn’t included.

As you may already know, I don’t recommend anyone to get an air purifier with an ionizer as it can do more harm than good.

Thankfully, you could turn the ionizer off on this model greatly relieved me.

That said, the filtration system without the ionizer is one of the best on the market.

This is because it has a pre-filter, carbon filter, and HEPA filter. 

These are some of the components you need from an air purifier if you’re looking to handle pet allergies.

On top of that, this is a very quiet air purifier.

This means your pet won’t be bothered by the noise and won’t have to turn the air purifier off while you sleep.

The air purifier even has an air quality monitor that you can use to check the air quality in your room at any given moment.

The machine also adjusts its settings automatically based on the air quality, which adds an extra layer of convenience.

Aside from the ionizer, which you can turn off anyways, I didn’t find too many things wrong with this air purifier.

It remains my favorite pick on the market. I would gladly recommend this to any pet owner who wants an air purifier to handle their allergies.

Levoit Core 300 – The Best Budget Air Purifier for Pets

If you’re shopping for an air purifier for pets on a budget, 

I couldn’t recommend the Levoit Core 300 enough.

To this day, this air purifier quickly falls in the top 3 because of how awesome it is in terms of performance, design, and value for money.

It was one of my first ever air purifiers, and I have it stored away in my home.

This air purifier comes with a three-stage HEPA filtration system, perfect for tackling your pets’ allergy triggers.

With that being said, it is pretty tiny.

It can cover an area of 219 ft² / 20 m², making it perfect for an average-sized room.

The filtration system within this unit is so great that it can capture and keep hold of 99.97% of solid particles of size as little as 0.3 microns.

In terms of size, it measures 8.7 x 8.7 x 14.2 in / 22 x 22 x 36 cm and weighs just 7.5 lb / 3.4 kg.

The only real downside to this air purifier is that it doesn’t have an activated carbon filter.

This means that it won’t be able to help you with VOCs and cooking odor, and other gasses.

Bissell air400 – The Best Silent Air Purifier for Pets

Silent operation is essential if you’re looking for an air purifier for pets.

If you want to effectively handle pet allergies with your air purifier, keep it on as much as possible.

In fact, it’s best practice to leave your air purifier on 24/7.

When you have a silent air purifier, it’s much easier to always leave it on.

This is because you won’t have to worry about the noise that keeps you up at night or annoys you throughout the day.

And when it comes to silent operation, this air purifier is arguably the best on the market.

On top of that, it comes with an excellent filtration system.

It can handle pet dander and other allergens like dust and pollen.

This air purifier even comes with a carbon filter that you can use to absorb VOCs and other toxic gasses that may be floating around the indoor air.

If there’s one downside to this air purifier, it’s on the expensive side.

This isn’t too much of a worry if you’re looking to invest money in a quality unit since it has many features to justify the price.

Considering the features, it isn’t too far off to say that this air purifier is a bargain.

Additionally, it has an automatic system. So, all you have to do when you get this air purifier is plug it in and leave it that way.

You won’t have to worry about adjusting the air purifier and its settings throughout the day.

Coway Airmega 400(G) Smart Air Purifier – The Best Premium Air Purifier for Pets

Last on this list is the best premium pick on the market.

I loved everything about this air purifier. 

It even came with a few features that beat out the Coway model that I went for 6 months ago.

However, it didn’t rank as the top pick on the list because it’s pretty expensive.

Since it’s expensive, you can expect this unit to have many great features.

It has a modern design doesn’t steal too much attention without looking bland. 

Another cool feature is that the air purifier runs on a smart system. This means you won’t have to worry about adjusting the settings manually.

All you have to do is turn it on and feel the results.

This air purifier is also great for large spaces.

It is designed to work in rooms of up to 1,500 square feet, which is why it’s so expensive.

On top of that, it comes with a filtration system that can easily filter out pollutants and pet dander in sizes as small as 0.3 microns.

Aside from the price, I don’t have that many complaints about this model.

However, remember that larger air purifiers inherently generate more noise.

While the noise isn’t unbearable, it is slightly louder than the noise on other purifiers for smaller spaces – such as the models listed above.

It may seem weird that an appliance like an air purifier can reduce pet-related allergies.

However, this is actually one of the primary reasons many people with pets get air purifiers in the first place.

To understand how these devices reduce pet allergies, we must look at how they work.

While they may seem fancy and intricate, air purifiers are simple machines.

Without the bells and whistles, an air purifier is essentially a fan, motor, and filtration system inside a case.

All the air purifier does is push air through the filter so that the filtration system can trap the different particles and contaminants in the air.

That way, clean air exits the air purifier and enters the room, ready for us to breathe.

So, how does the filtration system actually work?

Let’s start with the pre-filter.

This is for the larger particles in the air, like hair, dirt, and fur.

However, these aren’t intricate filters and are usually made of cloth, so a fair amount of particles slip through.

From the pre-filter, the air passes through the carbon filter.

This filter is there to absorb toxins and gases in the air that may cause you respiratory issues.

For example, it can capture VOCs or volatile organic compounds that can do plenty of harm if you’re exposed to them over time.

It can also absorb the compounds that cause strong odors, which makes it great for pet owners.

The last filter is the one that does the most for pet allergies.

This is the HEPA filter.

These ultra-fine fiberglass mesh filters are designed to capture particles as small as 0.3 microns.

Tips When Buying an Air Purifier for Pets

When buying an air purifier, you can’t just get any model you find online and expect it to work.

As I mentioned, different air purifiers have their own functions, and not all are designed to help with pet allergies.

In this guide, I chose to highlight four of the best air purifiers for pets.

While others can help with pet allergies, the ones I mentioned above were the most effective at the job.

To find these air purifiers, I had to look at specific features.

And while any of these air purifiers will do a great job if you’re looking to reduce your allergic reactions, you still need to find the right one for your needs.

So, let’s look at some of the significant considerations you need to consider when buying an air purifier for pets.

That way, you can easily choose the one from this list that best suits your needs.

Get the Right Size

Firstly, you need to consider the size of the air purifier.

As you can see on the product descriptions and the packaging, air purifiers are made to handle specific room sizes.

So, if you’re buying an air purifier for your home, try and measure the space you want to purify and find air purifiers that can handle it.

The thing is, you won’t be able to use one air purifier for the entire house.

So, you will have to move the air purifier from room to room, depending on where you or your pet are at the time.

That’s why you should measure the biggest space in your house.

Only Get High-Quality Filters

Another thing you need to consider is the filtration system.

To effectively handle pet fur and dander, you want to get the best filters possible.

Ideally, get an air purifier with a multi-stage filtration system.

The best filtration systems include a HEPA, carbon, and pre-filter.

You need to look for this in any air purifier, especially when buying one to handle pet fur and dander.

That’s why air purifiers without HEPA filters are not worth it if they aim to reduce allergies.

One type of purification method I highly suggest you avoid is ionization.

This is the process of introducing negative ions into the air, which will bind with the particles in the air and cause them to fall to the ground.

This isn’t ideal as you still have to sweep the dust eventually.

The Quieter, the Better

The last thing I recommend when buying an air purifier for pets is to look for silent models.

Pets have sensitive ears, and some of the sounds that aren’t a problem for us can cause a lot of stress for our pets.

So, I highly recommend finding silent air purifiers that won’t constantly stress out your pet.

On top of that, you want to keep your air purifier on 24/7, which can be problematic if your air purifier is loud, especially when sleeping.

Luckily, most air purifiers nowadays are pretty silent. That said, there are still models on the market that are quieter than others.

Conclusion

If you have pet allergies, it can be hard to be around animals, no matter how much you love them.

But nowadays, there is a way to live harmoniously with your pet, even if you have pet allergies.

And that’s with an air purifier.

As awesome as owning an air purifier is, you can’t just buy it, use it, and forget about it.

Like all appliances in the average modern-day household, air purifiers must be regularly maintained to operate at their best and serve their purpose for as long as possible.

When I bought my first HEPA filter air purifier, I had no idea it needed maintenance.

This meant any kind of cleaning or even replacing the filter itself.

Thankfully, a friend told me about it a few months into using it and that the HEPA filter needs to be replaced regularly.

I don’t even want to imagine what would have happened if I had never found out about this.

Because of my personal experience, I know that many air purifier owners also don’t know that their units must be maintained.

It needs to be cleaned, and the filter replaced to get the most out of it.

So, in today’s article, I will tell you everything you need to know about replacing your HEPA filter.

I will talk about when you need to do it, how to tell if it needs changing, how to do it, and more.

What is a HEPA Filter?

Before I tell you how often you should replace your HEPA filter, let’s start from the beginning.

That way, it will make sense when I tell you the answer.

HEPA filters are a specific type of high-quality air filtration filters that meet the HEPA filter standard.

For a HEPA filter to qualify to meet industry standards, it must be able to remove at least 99.97% of all solid particles in the air, including those as little as 0.3 microns in size.

Due to their extreme effectiveness in capturing solid particles from the air, they are the most popular type of filtration system in most modern-day air purifiers.

How Do HEPA Filters Work in Air Purifiers?

Before I get into how HEPA filters work, it’s first essential to understand how the air purifier works.

When you turn on your air purifier, the motor will start to spin the fan inside the air purifier.

This fan will then suck in air from your room, drive it through the HEPA filtration system, and release it back into your room.

Important to note that when air goes through the filtration system, 99.97% of the solid particles get stuck inside the unit, thanks to the HEPA filter.

As a result, all the air released back into the room is purified.

As for how the HEPA filter works, it doesn’t actually do anything.

It relies on the fan to drive air through it, and as I mentioned above, the solid particles get left behind during that process.

Why Does a HEPA Filter Need Changing?

Now that you know what a HEPA filter is and how it works, it’s pretty obvious why you need to change the filter regularly.

For more clarity, when the HEPA filter captures pollen, dust, hair, and other particles that are floating in the air over time, the HEPA filter will start to clog up.

This is when you need to clean your air purifier and make its life easier so it can serve you for longer.

When you regularly clean your HEPA filter, you will increase its life span, so you’ll have to replace it less often.

However, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to change it every once.

The ultra-thin fibers the HEPA filter is made of will get worn down and damaged over time.

As a result, the HEPA filter will become less effective than it once was.

Now, note that your air purifier will most likely still work as usual, except that it won’t be purifying the air as well as it once did.

If you don’t replace the filters or clean your air purifier often, it will damage the device or, worse, not turn on.

How Often Should You Change the HEPA Filter of Your Air Purifier?

I personally change the HEPA filter in my air purifier every 12 months.

That being said, I use my air purifier all the time.

It literally runs 24/7 as I enjoy breathing in clean air while I work from home and sleep during the night.

On top of that, I actively clean it, which prolongs its effectiveness.

I am fully aware that this isn’t the case for most people.

So how often you replace your HEPA filter depends on the maintenance level you conduct and how often you use your unit.

As a general rule of thumb, you should start thinking about replacing your HEPA filter after 8,000 hours.

Tracking the hours can be tricky, so the general advice if you use your air purifier daily is to change the HEPA filter every 12 to 18 months.

This is for the standard, non-washable HEPA filter.

Suppose you happen to have an air purifier with a washable HEPA filter.

In that case, you can easily use that filter for several years without worrying about replacing it.

That said, when I was in India, I bought the best air purifier for Delhi.

The air quality is some of the worst in the world, and over the 2 years I lived there, I had to change my washable HEPA filter 3 times.

How to Tell if Your HEPA Filter is Due For a Replacement?

You probably won’t be able to tell if the HEPA needs a replacement, even if you took the air purifier apart yourself.

Unless the HEPA filter is severely damaged, the naked eye can’t tell the difference between the quality of the fibers of a new and a used HEPA filter.

To tell if your HEPA filter is due for a replacement, I advise that you use a PM2.5 air quality monitor, which is also known as a particulate counter.

This device will be able to measure the quality of the air inside your home.

The best way to tell if your HEPA filter needs replacing is by measuring the air quality at different periods.

If you’re reading this and haven’t bought an air purifier, you can measure when you first get your air purifier vs. a couple of weeks later.

Or, if you already own a purifier, you can measure now and then a couple weeks from now.

That will give you a good indication of whether or not it’s time to get a new filter.

Some more complex and likely expensive air purifiers have quality control sensors.

So when your HEPA filter is due for a replacement, the air purifier will let you know.

How Do You Replace a HEPA Filter?

Unless you own a high-end model that can only be maintained by a professional, changing the HEPA filter inside your air purifier is simple.

Next, I’ll show you all the steps you should take to change the HEPA filter in your unit so you can continue reaping the benefits of your air purifier.

Get the Right Protective Gear

Before you do anything, you must ensure you have all the proper protective gear.

I recommend getting gloves (any type would work), protective goggles, and a mask.

This way, you will prevent any of the dust, hair, pollen, and mites from getting on your skin, in your eyes, or even being inhaled accidentally.

I never took these protective measures when I changed the first HEPA filter. 

And I accidentally dropped the HEPA filter on the floor.

I can’t tell you how much of the dust on the filter flew into the air and ended up in my lungs.

Take the Air Purifier Apart

I can’t exactly tell you how to take your air purifier apart since we all have different units built differently.

The best tip I can give you is to watch a YouTube video or follow the user manual that came with your air purifier when you bought it.

Most air purifiers are pretty simple in nature, so taking them apart takes a few minutes.

I currently own the Levoit Core 300, and to reach the HEPA filter, I flip it over, take off the bottom cover, and the HEPA filter is right there.

If you own a more complex unit, I would advise that you record yourself taking it apart.

That way, when the time comes to put back the air purifier, you can use the video if you get stuck.

I want to stress that your air purifier must be plugged off the wall before you start to take it apart.

Take the HEPA Filter Out and Replace It With the New One

Once you reach the HEPA filter inside your unit, pop the new one in.

The HEPA filters in most air purifiers are easy to put into place.

My HEPA filter clicks into place, and that’s how I know it’s installed correctly.

Some advanced air purifiers may have sensors that detect 

Put the Air Purifier Together

Once you’ve placed the new HEPA filter, it’s time to put everything back together.

Remember to use the user manual at all times, as that will help you take the unit apart and put it back together.

If you get stuck, refer to the recorded video of yourself taking the air purifier apart.

Conclusion

Depending on usage, you should ideally replace your HEPA filter every 12-18 months.

If you use your air purifier in a heavily polluted area around the clock, as I did, then replace your air purifier every 6 to 12 months.

As a general rule of thumb, you should change the HEPA filter in your unit after 8,000 hours of usage.

And remember, if you have a washable filter and take proper care of it, that can prolong its usefulness and result in you having to change it less frequently.

You’re not alone if you’re wondering how to tell if your air purifier is working. 

I remember when I got my first air purifier back in the day and was in the exact same situation. 

In my case, the air purifier was brand new, so I wondered if the unit was on in general.

If you’ve had your air purifier for a while and are wondering how to tell if it’s still working as intended, that’s more tricky sometimes. 

Whatever the case might be, in this article, I will be showing you the things you need to look out for to tell if your unit is working. 

And if you find that your air purifier isn’t working, at the end of the article, I’ve shared a few things you should check and do before buying a new model.

How To Tell If Your Air Purifier Is Working

You can tell if your air purifier is working in many different ways. While some are simple, others are a little more tricky. 

Below, I’ve listed several ways you can tell if your unit is working as it should.

The Sound

The easiest way to tell if your air purifier is on is by listening closely and hearing if the unit is making any noise. 

Pay attention to the sound of the fan. Most, if not all, air purifiers produce some noise when they are on.

It’s best to turn the air purifier to the highest setting as that’s when the fan will make the most noise.

That said, just because your air purifier works doesn’t mean it’s purifying the air. 

An air purifier won’t clean the air if there’s damage to the filtration system, causing it to be unable to trap particles and purify the air. 

It’s much more difficult to tell if your air purifier is working if there doesn’t seem anything wrong with it, so keep on reading to find out what you need to be looking for in that case.

No Strong Scents

If you have an air purifier with a carbon filter, then the smell in the room is one of the best ways to determine if it’s working. 

While air purifiers with carbon filters can absorb harmful pollutants like VOCs, their most noticeable effect is ridding the room of strong odors such as cooking odors or smells from your cat’s litter box.

This happens because a carbon filter absorbs all the compounds that may cause foul odors in the first place. 

So, when you turn it on, you should notice that strong scents start to disappear.

If you turn your air purifier on and notice no difference in the room’s smell, it might not work correctly. 

However, remember that not all air purifiers have carbon filters.

Check inside your device to see if it’s even designed to absorb strong scents in the first place.

Less Allergic Reactions

So, if you don’t have allergies, you won’t be able to use this method to tell if your air purifier works.

This is probably the best way to tell if an air purifier is working, but it’s also one of the hardest. 

It’s difficult to describe what “cleaner” air feels like, but I notice a huge difference when their air purifier is on.

The best I can describe is that the air feels better and is easier to breathe. 

It’s lighter and less dense.

Some people notice the difference the second they turn on their air purifier. 

Some people say it takes some time for them to notice. 

But once you notice the difference, it will be much easier to tell whether or not your air purifier is working properly.

Compare the Air Quality Levels

If nothing I have said has helped, using an air quality measuring tool is the best and easiest way to tell if your air purifier is working.

To use this tool appropriately, measure the air quality inside your home before and after turning the air purifier on.

Test the air quality levels with the air purifier off, then let it run for a few hours and test it again.

If the levels are the same, your air purifier will operate, but it isn’t cleaning the air.

Or you can skip this altogether if you have the money to invest in a higher-end air purifier. 

The more expensive devices have built-in air quality measuring technology to track that for you.

Finding out that your air purifier isn’t working as it once did is quite a devastating experience. 

I’ve had this issue a few times over the last five years, and it’s not a nice feeling – especially since you get so used to breathing clean air so much that when you go back to normal, things just don’t feel right.

So, if you’ve found that your air purifier isn’t working as intended, here are a few steps to bring it back to life and breathe in the clean air you’re accustomed to.

Clear, Wash, or Replace the Filters

The filtration system in your air purifier is what helps the air purifier actually purify the air. 

Without it (or when it’s damaged), the air purifier might still be on, but it won’t be purifying the air as well as it once did.

If the filters are causing a lack of performance inside the air purifier, you have three options.

You can clean the filters using a cloth and a hoover, wash the filters if they’re washable, or if you’ve not replaced them in a while, replace the filters.

Though changing the filters will cost you some money, it’s the best way to ensure your air purifier performs back to its best.

Check the Fuse

If the fuse in your air purifier has blown out, the air purifier won’t turn on, no matter what. 

And if you’re not particularly tech-savvy, you might even think the air purifier is broken, which was the case with me just a few years ago.

Most people don’t know that every appliance has a built-in fuse, often inside the plug. 

The fuse breaks the circuit if a fault in the appliance is spotted, causing too much current to flow. 

In other news, the fuse protects your air purifier, and it will be the first to go if something goes wrong. 

Fuses are a cheap replacement, so it’s not a big deal. Much better than having to buy a new air purifier.

Once you find where the fuse in your air purifier is, take a close look at it. 

If the wire is clearly broken in two, the fuse has blown out, and you need to replace it.

Take Your Air Purifier to a Specialist

If you have exhausted all of your options, take it to a specialist.

Fortunately, they can tell you the problem with your unit in just a few minutes because of their background. 

Their trained eye can spot faults that ordinary people like you and me can easily miss.
