The Best Air Purifiers for Allergies in 2022

All my friends rejoice when spring arrives. But I’m not so hot about the season due to my allergies.

For me, spring means pollen, dust, and lots of allergens that irritate my nose, throat, and lungs, not to mention the allergic reactions.

After living with allergies all my life, I’ve grown tired of all the sneezing and other symptoms that come with my allergies. So, I decided to go out and get myself an air purifier.

After all, modern air purifiers with HEPA filters are great at catching the particles and allergens that have caused me a lot of discomforts.

But when scrolling through the options, I learned that the market was packed, making it incredibly hard to find a good air purifier to help with my allergies. It took a lot of research, but I eventually found the right one for me.

And to make sure you won’t have the same issues when searching for your own air purifier, I’ve compiled a comprehensive list of the best air purifiers for allergies available today.

So, when you finally decide that you’re done with allergies, you don’t have to scroll through tons of options as I did.

8 Best Air Purifiers for Allergies

1. BLUEAIR Blue 211+ – Best Overall Air Purifier for Allergies

I’ll start my list with my favorite pick on the market, which I actually learned about through Reddit.

When I first started my journey to find the best air purifier for allergies, I went to the platform and asked people in the air purifier community what they’d recommend.

And a large number of them replied with this model, which ultimately ended up becoming my top pick on the market.

One of the standout features of this air purifier was the noise level. Usually, high-quality air purifiers are a bit loud.

And since I originally planned to put the air purifier in the bedroom, this was a huge problem.

But since this model can operate silently even on the strongest settings, it instantly became a great pick.

Additionally, this air purifier comes with a great HEPA filter.

Not only can it operate silently, but it does a great job at filtering out particles.

I noticed that it performed well with smoke, but it came through when filtering out pollen and allergens.

With this air purifier, you won’t have to experience huge sneezing fits due to the allergens in the air.

On top of that, this is one of the larger air purifiers on the market. So, it can easily handle both small and big rooms.

In fact, if I decided to move this air purifier to my living room, it would easily filter the air in the room without much of a problem.

With that said, no air purifier is perfect. And a lot of customers complained that this air purifier produced a foul odor.

I decided to get to the bottom of this, and I found out this is just a charcoal smell that comes from the filter that the air purifier uses.

The smell isn’t bad at all if you’re used to it.

However, it might stand out if you’ve never encountered the scent before.

But don’t worry, this won’t be a significant problem considering how well it can filter air and reduce odors.

Additionally, it doesn’t come with any smart features, which is a shame since many top-tier air purifiers nowadays come with one.

Pros:

  • Very low energy consumption
  • Silent operation
  • Intakes air from all angles
  • Great for large rooms
  • The filter works well in removing allergens and other particles

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have any smart features
  • Relatively heavy

2. Levoit Core 300s – The Best Budget Air Purifier for Allergies

This next pick is for those on a budget. But despite the low price, this air purifier is a top-tier model.

It can easily compete with some of the more expensive options and is why I placed it so high on this list.

To start, you don’t usually find affordable air purifiers that have real HEPA filters.

However, many people have testified that Levoit uses genuine HEPA filters, even on more affordable models like the Core 300s.

So, you don’t have to worry about this air purifier being unable to filter out particles causing you trouble.

Another cool feature I found with this model is that it’s ozone free.

Many cheap air purifiers have ozone generators that have proven dangerous for humans, especially in closed spaces.

One thing I loved about this air purifier is that you can replace the filter for different needs.

For example, if you only have allergies during certain seasons, then you don’t need the pollen and allergen filter year-round.

This allows you to switch to other filters like the smog filter for polluted areas or the smoke filter if you live in an area with lots of wildfires.

As a bonus, it can save you some bucks down the line, as you don’t need to buy pricier replacement filters for special needs year-round.

However, I have to point out that this is a fairly small air purifier. It isn’t as large as some of the more expensive options on this list, but it’s still big enough to handle small and medium rooms.

If you put this in a large room, it may not be able to cleanse the air properly, which could be a letdown.

Pros:

  • Ideal for small rooms
  • Affordable
  • Interchangeable filters depending on your needs
  • Quiet operation
  • Replacement filters are relatively cheap

Cons:

  • Not strong enough for large rooms
  • Doesn’t have an auto mode

3. Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Air Purifier– The Best Premium Air Purifier for Allergies

This next option is specifically designed for those who have money to spare. When it comes to home appliances, Dyson has quite a reputation.

They are known for sleek, modern, innovative, and, most importantly, effective products. And this air purifier is no exception.

The first thing I noticed about this air purifier is its great design. It’s very different from other air purifiers on the market.

On top of that, it has a bunch of smart features that match the modern design.

So, you can connect the machine to your phone or utilize the excellent auto mode that detects the particles in the air and adjusts accordingly, which I found to be one of my favorite features.

Another cool feature is that this isn’t just an air purifier. It’s also a mini space heater and cooler.

So, aside from removing harmful particles from the air, you can raise the temperature in the winter and lower it in the summer.

This is a great air purifier for all seasons, and with the quiet operation mode, you can easily leave this air purifier on while sleeping.

It’s no lie that this is an expensive model.

However, you can rest assured that you get good value for your money with this option.

Not only do you get an air purifier with a HEPA filter to help with your allergies, but you also get a cool device you can use to control the temperature in a space.

However, only measuring L9.76 x W8.07 x H30.08 inches, this is a pretty small air purifier for the price.

So, if you plan on getting an air purifier for the living room, an office, or a large bedroom, this might not be the best option for you.

But for home use, there aren’t too many air purifiers that do the job as well as this one in my experience.

Pros:

  • Unique  and modern design
  • Can be used to heat and cool the room
  • Has a HEPA filter
  • Comes with smart features
  • Great automatic mode

Cons:

  • Fairly expensive
  • Relatively small
Coway Airmega AP-1512HH(W) The Best Air Purifier for Pet Owners with Allergies

4. Coway Airmega AP-1512HH(W) – The Best Air Purifier for Pet Owners with Allergies

One group of people that can benefit a lot from an air purifier is pet owners.

I personally own this one and have a puppy, so speaking from personal experience.

This is because air purifiers, especially good models like the Coway Airmega air purifier, are more than capable of sucking in and filtering out animal fur and dander from the air.

This means that you won’t have to worry about sneezing and other allergic reactions if you’re allergic to your pets’ hair or dander.

There are tons of people who own cats and dogs, even if they’re allergic.

This is because some allergies are mild and tolerable. But even then, allergies can be annoying. But removing animal hair from the air with this air purifier becomes much less of a problem.

On top of that, this air purifier isn’t that expensive, especially for its size.

You can use this purifier for small to medium rooms, which gives you a lot of value for the price.

Additionally, I found that it easily blends into the room, so you won’t have to worry about your pets knocking it over or attacking the air purifier.

The downside to this model is its durability. Since it’s more affordable than most, it isn’t made with as high-quality materials as other air purifiers I have had.

So, you need to take extra care when using this air purifier. Misuse can lead to the air purifier breaking down, which can be a pricey experience.

Pros:

  • Great at filtering out animal hair
  • Modern and lowkey design
  • Comes with eco mode, timer, and auto mode
  • Different fan speeds for different rooms
  • Relatively affordable

Cons:

  • Not the most durable option on the market

5. Levoit Core 400s – The Best Air Purifier for Small Rooms

When doing my research, I really enjoyed the models Levoit had to offer.  While they are small and affordable, they are very functional and great for smaller areas. And if you want an air purifier for a small room, I highly suggest the Levoit Core 400s, a compact yet highly effective air purifier.

To start, it comes with a HEPA filter. This means it can easily filter out allergens, pollen, and other irritants in the air. If you have allergies like me, this is a great feature as you won’t have to worry about waking the neighbors with your incessant sneezing anymore.

A cool feature of this model is that it’s Alexa-compatible. This means you can connect it to your speaker and utilize voice commands. This makes it much easier to operate the machine, which is a huge plus for those who don’t want to walk to the device to turn it on all the time.

Additionally, it’s straightforward to leave this air purifier on 24/7 and trust it to cleanse the air. With the auto mode on this model, all you have to do is set it and forget about it. This model will automatically sense when there are a lot of particles in the air and make adjustments accordingly.

With that said, my only complaint with this model is the size. If I had a smaller room, this would be my go-to pick. But since I have a fairly large bedroom, this air purifier was just not the one for me, despite all the features at a low price.

Pros:

  • Relatively affordable
  • Easy to use
  • Comes with a ton of smart features
  • A great automatic mode
  • Comes with a real HEPA filter

Cons:

  • Not strong enough for larger rooms

6. PuroAir HEPA 14 – The Best Air Purifier for Large Rooms

Now that we’ve talked about a model for small rooms, let’s take a look at the other side of the spectrum. The PuroAir HEPA 14 is a great air purifier that will work incredibly well in larger rooms. It has a strong fan that allows it to cleanse the air in a 1,115-square-foot room.

Even if you don’t have a room that large, this is great for home use. For example, you can use it to cleanse the air of an entire floor. Or, you can use the air purifier in an office, which is a great way to reduce allergies in the workplace.

Additionally, this air purifier has a real HEPA filter. Not only that, it’s equipped with a filter capable of handling rooms of that size. So, you won’t have to worry about the filter giving out because there are too many particles floating around in the space you place it in.

With that said, I have to admit that this air purifier doesn’t exactly have the best design. It’s really plain and not in a good way. But that’s just my taste. There were tons of people ready to disagree with me on the internet, and if you’re one of them, this might be the air purifier for you.

Pros:

  • Great for large rooms
  • Comes with an automatic mode
  • Easy to control
  • Equipped with a real HEPA filter
  • Great for people with allergies

Cons:

  • The design isn’t for everyone

7. Westinghouse 1804 – The Best Car Air Purifier

If you drive a lot, you expose yourself to a lot of pollution. Our world is designed in a way where cars are everywhere. And if you have a sensitive nose, this could be a huge problem. On top of that, driving around in a vehicle also exposes you to tons of allergens, which can be a huge problem if you’re driving.

The solution to this?

I found that placing an air purifier in the car and closing the windows was a great way to eliminate my allergy problems. And if you need an air purifier for your car, there aren’t many options that can beat out this Westinghouse model.

One of the reasons this is great for cars is the design. Unlike other air purifiers, this one can lay down flat. So, it will be much easier for you to place it in the car and just forget about it. On top of that, it has a neat travel strap, allowing you to carry it with you wherever you go.

I found it very convenient since you can bring this air purifier to hotels, trips, and anywhere you need clean and purified air. This is a huge help for people during allergy season, as it allows them to bring a small personal air purifier that can clean the air in an entire room.

And to my surprise, this air purifier has a real HEPA filter and many other features that match the effectiveness of air purifiers built for homes and bedrooms.

With that said, it’s pretty small and expensive for its size. But considering the fact that it’s portable, this is a worthwhile investment.

Pros:

  • Portable
  • Ideal for cars
  • Can lay down flat
  • Has a convenient carrying strap
  • Equipped with a real HEPA filter

Cons:

  • Not large enough for regular home use

8. BISSELL air320 Smart Air Purifier– The Best Low-Noise Air Purifier

Air purifiers can be noisy. And while modern manufacturers have found ways to make them operate at lower volumes, this one eliminates the noise the best while performing well.

This smart air purifier from BISSELL scores high in nearly every category but excelled in its low noise performance.

But aside from its low noise levels, it’s a truly modern air purifier. It’s large and capable of handling big rooms and has a HEPA filter and a 3-stage filtration system to ensure that you never have to inhale harmful particles.

Since it’s so quiet, people say you can use this just about anywhere.

In fact, even if you’re a sensitive sleeper who can’t handle noises while you sleep, this air purifier is a great way to get some shut-eye and breathe in purified air at the same time.

This also makes it one of the best air purifiers for babies and nurseries since it won’t disturb their sleep.

With that said, this is one of the more expensive options available. While I believe it’s worth every penny, it is pricey and something you must save up for. But if you’re willing to pay the price, this is a great model.

Pros:

  • Low-noise
  • Great filtration system
  • Ideal for large rooms
  • Modern design

Cons:

  • Relatively expensive

Best Air Purifier For Allergies Buying Guide

Okay, now that you know which air purifiers are your best options for allergies, it’s time to decide which is right for you.

And while they all have flaws, I ensured that any of the above picks would be great for people with allergies. They all have real HEPA filters, which are proven to make an actual difference, come with advanced features, and are strong enough to remove any allergens from the air.

So, how do you decide which one is for you?

Well, I told you earlier that I want to make it easier for you to find an air purifier so you won’t have to go through the same trouble as I did when finding my air purifier. That’s why I’ve made a comprehensive guide containing all the features you need to consider when buying your first air purifier.

You can read more about these factors below.

Filtration System

In essence, an air purifier is just a fan and a filter. While it may seem like air purifiers are more complicated than that, this isn’t the case. Air purifiers work by sucking in air, filtering that air, and releasing it into the room free from particles.

So, the most important thing you need to consider is the filtration system in your air purifier. And after researching and looking at what the experts have to say, I found that there are only two filtration systems that can actually help your allergies.

These are ionizers and HEPA filters.

Let’s start with the ionizers. Ionic air purifiers work by introducing ions into the air. This works by using a carbon brush or high-voltage wire to attract dust and other particles.

From there, negative ions interact with air particles, drawing them to the air purifier and the filter.

The second system is my preferred option and the one I have for my home. HEPA stands for “high-efficiency particulate air.”

While it uses advanced technology, it’s a pretty simple concept.

This mechanical filter forces air through its mesh filtration, allowing it to catch tobacco smoke, dust, dander, and other harmful particles.

So, if you had to choose between these two filtration systems for your allergies, I suggest using the HEPA filter.

However, I noticed that there were a couple of air purifiers on the market with HEPA filters and ionizers, which could be what you’re looking for.

But in my case, I was fine with the HEPA filter alone as it did the job way better than I initially thought it would.

Room Size

Another thing that’s important to consider is the room size. Generally, larger rooms need stronger air purifiers, and smaller rooms don’t need that much strength.

A great way to determine whether or not an air purifier can cleanse the air in your room is by looking at the clean air delivery rate or CADR. A higher CADR rating means that the air purifier can handle larger space with more square feet.

However, when looking for an air purifier for myself, I found out through Reddit that an air purifier works best when you don’t introduce new air to the room as much as possible. And since most rooms – at least the ones in my home – aren’t airtight, I knew that I had to get an air purifier that could cleanse a larger area than the room I planned to put it in.

This way, I was sure that the air purifier could handle all the new particles that fly in from adjacent rooms. But for the best results, I still recommend keeping all doors and windows closed in a room to reduce the harmful particles and allergens in the air.

Replacement Cycle

One thing I didn’t like about most of the top-performing air purifiers on the market was that the filters needed to be replaced. I was under the impression that we’ve come far enough that we can produce filters that can last forever. But after reading more about the technology behind filters, I came to accept that it is best to replace the filter from time to time.

However, even if I accepted the fact that I had to replace the filter eventually, I didn’t want to do it regularly. So, I made sure to look for air purifiers that had a long replacement cycle. This means that I can use the same filter for a long time coming, and I won’t have to worry about replacing it every month.

If you aren’t keen on buying new filters regularly and replacing them after a couple of weeks, then I recommend you look for air purifiers with long replacement cycles.

The Environment

Another major consideration is the environment. The more allergens and particles floating around your area, the more you need an air purifier. I live in an area that isn’t too polluted. However, there are certain months of the year when pollen is all over the place, and I find myself sneezing wherever I am.

So, I knew that I needed a strong air purifier with a good HEPA filter when there’s pollen in the air. Additionally, since I have severe allergies, getting a charcoal-filtered air purifier wouldn’t be the best idea anyway.

When buying an air purifier for allergies, make sure to get one that can handle the allergens in your area. Remember, an air purifier only works if you have the right model. So, aside from considering room size, you need to consider the environment to determine what kind of filtration system and features you need.

Automatic Modes

One of my biggest surprises, when I got my first air purifier, was that I had to leave it on 24/7. This sounded ridiculous to me, but again, new particles are constantly entering the room, so it didn’t take too long to make sense.

No one likes spending too much money on electricity bills, including me. That’s why I was thrilled to learn that my air purifier had an automatic mode. This mode changed the air purifier’s strength based on the air quality.

So, if there weren’t that many particles flying around, the air purifier would switch to a lower setting. But if there were many particles, it would switch to a higher setting to compensate. This was a handy feature and made me more comfortable with leaving the air purifier on 24/7.

And when I decided not to turn my air purifier off, I immediately felt a difference. Keeping the air purifier on all the time prevented particles from building up in the air, which ensured that I didn’t get allergies regardless of the time of the day.

Why You Should Trust This Review

I am one of those people who really need an air purifier. Even the slightest bit of pollen or dust floating in the air gets me sneezing for hours.

So, when I’m at home, I need high-quality, filtered air to reduce my allergies.

That’s why I did a lot of research to find the best air purifiers on the market.

I knew if I didn’t find a good air purifier, I would have to deal with my allergies on my own for a long time coming.

But since I did the research, I found an air purifier that suited my needs and kept my allergies at bay.

I’ll admit, the search was complex, and I had to go through many sources. And after all that effort, I couldn’t help but share what I learned with other people who have the same struggle.

You can rest assured that every product on this list is top-tier and will serve you well.

So now, it’s up to you to figure out which model from this list fits your preferences and go for that one!
