The 4 Best Air Purifiers for Asthma

I suffer from asthma pretty severely.

And since there is no cure for asthma, I had to try at least minimize the triggers that would cause me to suffer from asthma attacks in the first place.

I quickly discovered that many pollutants, mold, dust, and other solid particles in the air can irritate my lungs and cause an asthma attack.

Only if I could find a way to reduce those particles in the air, at least when I’m home.

That’s precisely why I was instantly hooked when I came across air purifiers.

I finally found a way to control my asthma triggers before I experience yet another suffocating asthma attack.

As I dug a little deeper, I found most air purifiers offer a range of benefits, but not all are equipped to capture the common asthma triggers in our air.

And when I went on the market knowing the features I needed in an air purifier for asthma, I found that there were still tons of options available.

Don’t get me wrong; I enjoyed having different choices to find one that truly fit my needs.

However, all of the options on the market also made it quite difficult for me to pick the right one.

And that’s why I created this guide – to help you pick an air purifier that is perfect for your needs.

I’ve also included a quick guide at the end that will help you find out what air purifiers can help with asthma and how to find a good air purifier for asthma.

Levoit Core 400s – The Best Overall Air Purifier for Asthma

Suppose you’re looking for an air purifier brand that balances quality and price.

In that case, Levoit is easily amongst the best out there.

Levoit is one of the top air purifier brands regarding performance and value for money.

And if you need an air purifier for asthma, there aren’t many options that compete with the Core 400S.

This was my favorite pick on the market and the one I bought for my house.

This model came with everything I needed, from an air purifier to eliminating asthma triggers.

The first feature that caught my eye was the HEPA filter.

This model uses a true H13 HEPA filter, considered one of the best filters available for air purifying.

These filters can capture solid particles as small as 0.3 microns, which are the primary triggers for an asthma attack.

If you want an air purifier for asthma, you need one with a True HEPA filter, and this Levoit model has one of the best ones in the game.

On top of that, this air purifier comes with a carbon filter, which helps absorb harmful gases.

That way, you won’t have to worry about strong and foul odors at home.

Additionally, you will breathe in fewer Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

So, when it comes to filtration, this air purifier doesn’t disappoint and will easily be able to remove any potential asthma triggers in the air.

This is also a very modern air purifier.

It has a sleek design that easily blends with just about any room, making it easier for you to find the correct placement for the air purifier.

And since it connects to your phone, you can also control all the air purifier settings without leaving your seat.

One of the everyday customer complaints with this model is that you must update the firmware if you want the sensors to work.

To do this, you need to download the Levoit app.

This can be annoying if you didn’t plan on using the innovative features, but it only took me a couple of minutes to do.

On top of that, the app offers a lot of different functions, so it’s actually worth downloading.

Pros:

  • It has built-in smart features
  • Sleek and modern design
  • It comes with a high-quality filtration system
  • Ideal for people with asthma
  • Great for medium and large rooms

Cons:

  • The firmware isn’t always up-to-date when the unit arrives.

Coway Airmega 400s – Best Premium Air Purifier for Asthma

One of the websites I visited to find the best air purifier for asthma was Reddit.

The website contains people with real-world air purifier experience who can give reputable recommendations.

And one of the top recommendations on Reddit is this Coway model, which is fairly expensive but comes with features that make it a worthwhile investment for the years to come.

To start, this is a large air purifier.

It’s designed to handle up to 1,500 square feet.

So, if you have a large room or need an air purifier for the living room, this model is a great option.

This model doesn’t need multiple air purifiers for one home, which is a huge advantage.

Another cool feature is the real-time pollution sensor.

This gives you an air quality reading of your indoor air and allows the air purifier to automatically adjust the settings depending on the air quality inside.

This way, the unit won’t have to work or use more electricity than it has to.

This is a great air purifier for people with asthma because of its filtration system.

This model comes with a HEPA filter and a carbon filter designed to capture small particles that could trigger an asthma attack.

As long as you keep the air purifier on, you won’t have to worry about an asthma attack as much.

The only real downside to the Coway Airmega 400s is the price.

But, if you’re willing to invest in helping prevent asthma attacks, it’s definitely a model to consider.

Pros:

  • Great for large rooms and spaces
  • It comes with a multi-stage filtration system
  • Silent operation
  • It comes with smart features
  • Energy efficient

Cons:

  • Fairly expensive

BlueAir 211+ – Best Silent Air Purifier for Asthma

If you have an air purifier at home, it’s best to keep it on all the time

As I said earlier, if the air purifier is constantly on, it won’t stop purifying the air.

You won’t have to worry about particles and pollutants floating around your indoor space.

Easier said than done.

If the air purifier is loud, it’s not a problem during the day.

But, at night, a loud air purifier can be a problem.

If you’re a sensitive sleeper, you probably won’t want to have an air purifier humming in the background as it can disturb your sleep quality.

This is why you’ll want a quiet air purifier.

The quieter an air purifier, the better. And in today’s market, there aren’t too many options that operate as silently as the BlueAir 211+.

With this air purifier, it will be hard to notice that it’s even on.

This allows you to keep the air purifier on 24/7 without worrying about a loud and low hum getting in the way of your sleep or day-to-day.

So, if you need silence when you sleep, this air purifier would be a great option.

On top of that, BlueAir is a very trusted air purifier brand.

So, you can rest accrued that this model comes with the features you need to prevent and reduce asthma at home, such as a HEPA filter, carbon filter, and automatic mode.

The one downside to this model is that it’s a bit more expensive than other air purifiers in its range.

While it comes with great features, it’s still a relatively small air purifier and won’t be able to handle large spaces, which is a slight letdown for the price.

But aside from that, this air purifier is definitely top-tier.

And if you have a small to medium space that you want to keep free of asthma triggers, you won’t regret going for this model.

Pros:

  • One of the most silent air purifiers available
  • Easy to use
  • Great for catching triggers of asthma
  • Modern and sleek design
  • Ideal for smoke and other pollutants

Cons:

  • No automatic mode
  • Relatively expensive

Levoit Core 300 – The Best Budget Air Purifier

You don’t have to bust the bank to get your hands on a high-quality air purifier, and this model is solid proof of that.

With the Levoit Core 300, you get a HEPA filter, quiet operation, and a sleek design at a bargain price.

So, if you aren’t keen on spending that much money on an air purifier but would still like to prevent asthma attacks in the future, this could be the model you need.

For its size and price, I was genuinely surprised at how silent it is.

It operates at just about 24dB.

So, you can quickly leave this air purifier on all day and all night without worrying about any noise.

On top of that, you can turn off the display light while the air purifier is running, making it easier to sleep in the same room as the air purifier.

This model comes with a 3-stage HEPA filter.

So right out of the box, it can reduce a significant amount of asthma triggers in the air causing your respiratory problems.

You can also switch out the filters depending on your needs, giving you more flexibility to customize the unit as per your needs.

Aside from the HEPA filter, you can also get pet, smoke, and toxin filters specifically designed for the Core 300.

So, if you have pet allergies, you can switch out the filter to have an animal in the house even if you have allergies.

Or, if you live in an area with wildfires, you can switch out the filters as needed to allow the air purifier to capture smoke before you breathe it in.

While this model gives you a huge bang for your buck, it does have a couple of downsides.

To start, this is a reasonably small model.

So, this is great for bedrooms, home offices, and other tiny spaces.

If you plan to use an air purifier for a large room, this air purifier isn’t good enough.

Another thing I noticed with this air purifier is that it doesn’t have an automatic mode.

This means that every time you want to adjust the settings, you must do it manually using the touchpad on the machine.

But if you’re okay with those minor issues, this air purifier is a great option.

And since it’s very affordable, you won’t have to adjust your finances as much to get your hands on it.

Pros:

  • One of the most affordable great asthma air purifiers on the market
  • It comes with a HEPA filter
  • You can change the filters depending on your needs
  • Easy to use
  • Silent operation

Cons:

  • Not ideal for large spaces
  • It doesn’t have an automatic mode

What Air Purifiers Can Help with Asthma?

To understand which air purifiers can help with asthma, you have to know how air purifiers help with asthma in the first place.

Asthma has no cure.

However, there are ways to prevent the chances of having an asthma attack in the first place.

One of, if not the best, way to do this is by eliminating as many asthma triggers from the air as possible.

As I said earlier, different pollutants and particles, such as dust, smoke, and chemicals, can cause an asthma attack.

And being in a space that doesn’t have any pollutants or contaminants dramatically reduces the chances of developing an asthma attack.

With that in mind, getting an air purifier with a high-quality filtration system is the best approach for asthma.

There are tons of air purifiers on the market that rely on ionization and UV lights to reduce the particles in the air.

However, these air purifiers usually leave ozone in the room and cause the particles to drop to the floor, which can cause more problems if you already have asthma.

Carbon and HEPA filters are the two filters you need when finding an air purifier to help with asthma.

These filters can capture chemicals, particles, dust, and other asthma triggers in the air before you breathe them in.

On top of that, everything they catch stays inside the air purifier, so there’s no chance you accidentally inhale them once the machine has processed them.

How to Find a Good Air Purifier for Asthma

The filtration system is the most important feature of an air purifier to help with asthma.

As I mentioned, a true HEPA filter and an active carbon filter are all you need to see an improvement in your respiratory system when indoors.

But, there’s other homework you need to do if you’re looking for an air purifier to prevent an asthma attack.

Remember this checklist before spending your hard-earned money on an air purifier:

Room Size vs. the Filtration Capacity of Your Air Purifier

When looking for the perfect model, pay attention to the air purification capacity of the air purifier.

Ideally, buy an air purifier with an air purification capacity that is the same or higher compared to the square footage of the room you’re looking to purify.

Now, one air purifier can’t purify the air in your whole house.

You can either buy more than one or constantly move one from one room to the next.

If you’re looking to move the purifier around, make sure to measure the room size of your largest room and look for an air purifier with that capacity.

If you can, I also highly recommend looking at the ACH or air changes per hour so that the air purifier can constantly provide clean air in your space.

ACH refers to the number of times an air purifier can replace all the air in a room within an hour.

So, the more, the better.

As a general rule of thumb, it’s best to look for models that deliver 4ACH or more.

A 4ACH air purifier can clean the air in your room four times every hour.

With a powerful device like that, you won’t have to deal with particles in the air that could end up in your lungs, causing various respiratory issues – including an asthma attack.

Look for an Air Purifier with Automatic Mode

Not all air purifiers come with an automatic mode feature.

So I highly suggest you look for an air purifier with this ability.

The automatic feature in an air purifier allows the unit to measure the air quality in your room and adjust its performance accordingly.

That way, you have guaranteed clean air, and the air purifier won’t work harder than it needs to.

Best Air Purifiers for Asthma: Conclusion

Air purifiers are an excellent investment if you have asthma.

While they don’t cure asthma, they can reduce the chances of an attack.

Their ability to capture and trap different particles also saves you from other respiratory problems.

With this guide, we hope we have “laid out the red carpet” to help you buy the right one for you.

Not all air purifiers on the market are ideal for people with asthma.

But once you have an air purifier that can effectively capture the particles that trigger an asthma attack, you’ll find yourself much safer and more comfortable in your home.
