Can Air Purifiers Help With Eczema?

There are a ton of benefits of using an air purifier. While most people buy air purifiers to help them with their COPD, asthma, and other respiratory conditions – I bought my air purifier to help me get through the allergy season.

But that isn’t all air purifiers are good for. Many people actually use air purifiers to help them with skin conditions including pimples, acne, and even eczema. So, if you suffer from a skin condition like eczema, you might be wondering if an air purifier would be a worthwhile investment.

So, in this article, I will share with you my personal experience suffering from skin conditions and how my real HEPA filter air purifier has helped me over the last several years as well as share with you any information that I have found from doing hours of research on the internet.

Do Air Purifiers Actually Help the Skin?

Air purifiers cannot directly help improve the quality of your skin. Rather, they purify the air, and as a result of that – your skin will not get in contact with any allergens or irritants that normally circulate in the air.

In order to reap this benefit – you need to first make sure you get an air purifier that can actually purify the air properly and clear it free from any allergens that can affect your sensitive skin. I personally use an air purifier with a real HEPA filter and the results have been remarkable. Not only is my skin better than ever but I also don’t suffer anywhere near as much from seasonal allergies.

How Air Purifiers Can Improve the Skin

I didn’t actually buy my air purifier to help with my skin. I bought it because I liked the thought of breathing healthy and clean air. However, after some time of using it – naturally I become more and more aware of the benefits that come with breathing in clean air.

I noticed my skin condition improving – and most importantly – my eczema. Though it definitely took some time – the benefits were pretty evident and I was very pleasantly surprised. I say this because eczema and skin conditions as a whole can be pretty annoying and stubborn to treat.

To help you better understand how air purifiers can help improve your skin – keep on reading the section below.

Trapping Allergens

If your skin is sensitive like mine – then you’d know how allergens can impact it. From rashes and pimples to eczema and other prominent skin conditions – it’s very easy for sensitive skin to be impacted from poor quality of air.

And while you can’t do much while you’re outside – there is a lot you can do to minimize your exposure to allergens when inside your home. Getting an air purifier with a real HEPA filter will be your best friend when it comes to eliminating skin conditions that arise as a result of allergens. This is because real HEPA filters are made to trap over 99.97% of fine particles that circulate in the air we breathe.

As I’ve mentioned a few times in this article – there are many air purifiers with HEPA-like filters, which are still decent but nowhere near as good at catching the finest of allergens and pollutants in the air.

Reducing Indoor Pollutants

Indoor pollutants present in the air can affect the quality of your skin to a pretty great extent. If you have acne, rashes, or eczema – then sleeping with the air purifier on is a great idea. This is because clean air means that there’s no dust and dirt getting in contact with your skin, which are the primary causes of numerous skin conditions.

While the air purifier won’t totally remove your pimples and other skin conditions, it can make them heal faster. This is because there is going to be fewer bacteria in the air that can irritate your skin.

Indoor pollutants are also known to speed up aging. So, there’s a possibility that your air purifier could even help you retain younger-looking skin as you grow older.

Capturing Hydrocarbons

One more advantage of air purifiers with real HEPA filters is that they can filter out hydrocarbons.

Hydrocarbons can give skin a fairly dull look and result in poor pigmentation.

So, reducing the number of hydrocarbons in the air allows your skin to be brighter and healthier, which in turn can help with skin conditions including eczema.

What Air Purifiers Can Help with Eczema?

My personal air purifier worked great for my eczema, but I want to mention that not all air purifiers are equipped to do that.

So, in the section below – I will talk to you more about what air purifiers can help with eczema.

Air Purifiers with HEPA Filters

Eczema is caused by allergens in the air. And the only filter that can capture these allergens are real HEPA filters.

These are modern mechanical filters that you can find on many air purifiers. So, if you want to reduce your eczema during the allergy season, make sure your air purifier comes with a real HEPA filter.

However, keep in mind that there are some manufacturers that use HEPA-like filters which aren’t the same as real HEPA filters.

I highly suggest only going for options that use real HEPA filters if you want to get your money’s worth and see actual results.

Low Noise Air Purifiers

If you want to get the most out of your air purifier, you need to keep it on 24/7.

And unfortunately – that means sleeping with the air purifier on. For this reason, you need to get a low-noise air purifier so you can easily fall asleep while it’s on and not have to wake up in the middle of the night due to the noise of the fan.

Other Ways to Reduce Eczema

While my air purifier helped my eczema, it didn’t completely eliminate it.

As I mentioned before, I made some significant lifestyle changes before the allergy season this year, and combining these changes with my air purifier was the reason my eczema wasn’t as bad.

So, if you really want to reduce the hassle of dealing with your eczema – I highly recommend you to follow the same lifestyle chances as me.

Diet & Exercise

What you eat plays a big role in how your skin looks. If you want healthy skin, then you need to be eating healthy. If you have healthy skin, there’s a lesser chance that eczema will affect you, which is why I suggest adding more vitamin A, C, and various antioxidants to your diet. You can do this through most fruits and vegetables.

Additionally, exercise plays a key role in the quality of your skin as well.

So, if you’re looking to have healthier skin inside and out, I suggest making some lifestyle changes.

It doesn’t have to be sudden, but you’ll be surprised how much a little exercise and eating the right food can do for your skin over time.

A Proper Skincare Routine

Keeping your skin clean is essential. So, if you have eczema and want to deal with the symptoms more effectively, I recommend a good skincare routine.

Now, everyone’s skin is different, which is why you may need to test various products or speak to a dermatologist to find the right treatment plan for your individual circumstances.

Sun Exposure

Like all living things, humans too need direct sunlight.

If you’re suffering from skin conditions – I cannot stress the importance of getting a decent amount of sun every single day – even if it’s cloudy.

Sun is crucial for many reasons, including making our cells stronger and healthier, which will have a huge impact on how well our skin deals with bacteria and allergens, which cause skin irritation and lead to skin conditions like eczema.

Conclusion

Skin conditions can be pretty annoying – especially eczema. What we do know is that eczema is caused by allergens like mold spores and pollen floating around the air. But if you have an air purifier, you can eliminate these particles from your home, resulting in healthier skin.

And remember – while the air purifier can help with the quality of your skin – what really matters the most is your diet, lifestyle, and skincare routine.
